1690s, "to set in opposition with a view to show the differences; to stand in opposition or contrast; to set off (each other) by contrast," from French contraster, modified by or from Italian contrastare "stand out against, strive, contend," from Vulgar Latin *contrastare "to stand opposed to, withstand," from Latin contra "against" + stare "to stand," from PIE [原始印欧语] root *sta- "to stand, make or be firm."
Middle English had contrest "to fight against, to withstand," which became extinct. The modern word is a 17c. re-introduction as a term in fine arts, on the notion of "to exhibit differences or heighten effect by opposition of position, form, color, etc." Related: Contrasted; contrasting; contrastive.
Contrast may refer to:
- Contrast (vision), the difference in color and light between parts of an image
- Contrast (statistics). In statistics, particularly analysis of variance and linear regression, a contrast is a linear combination of two or more factor level means (averages) whose coefficients add up to zero. 在统计学中,特别是方差分析和线性回归中,对比度是两个或多个系数相加为零的因子水平均值(平均值)的线性组合。
- Behavioral contrast, a phenomenon studied in psychology (behavior analysis)
- Contrast agent/medium, any internally administered substance that has a different opacity from soft tissue on radiography or computed tomography [CT]; includes barium [钡], used to opacify parts of the gastrointestinal tract [胃肠道]; water-soluble iodinated [碘化] compounds, used to opacify blood vessels or the genitourinary tract [泌尿生殖道]; may refer to air occurring naturally or introduced into the body; also, paramagnetic [顺磁性的] substances used in magnetic resonance imaging [磁共振成像].
- administer: give someone a medicine or medical treatment
- Contrast ratio, a measure of a display system
- Display contrast, of electronic visual displays
